Race Reviews for Half Marathons in Delaware

Do you have a race review for a half marathon in Delaware?  If so, feel free to submit a half marathon review for consideration!   Here are some great topics runners like to read about in your half marathon review:

Was the race website organized and informative?  Distances visible on home page, full address of location for out of state visitors, city and state visible of non-local participants, details about course, critical info easily found, etc.

Was the race well organized?  Packet pick up, expo, start time, timing, support?

Did this race have an expo, or just a small packet pickup?

Were enough volunteers recruited? How was on course support?  Enough food?  Enough water?

How was the post race party?  Good food? Music?  Enough food?  Enough refreshments & recovery food or drinks? Describe.

How was the medal? below average? average? excellent?  beyond excellent, pretty cool?
Do you have a photo to share of your bling to include?

How was the swag?  Any awesome swag?  Brand of shirt?

How was the cost of the race compared to most half marathons?  about average, a great deal, way too expensive for the swag, bling and support that was provided, well worth the cost for the swag, bling, post race party and support received?

Was this a small race, a medium sized race, or large race?

Was the course scenic?  What was the highlight of the course (or highlights of the course)?
What made the course fun (or totally boring)?
Do you have any good scenic course photos to send us?

Describe the course.  Was it flat?  Rollers the whole way?  Flat with one big monster hill?  All up?  All down?  All up then all down? etc.  Was it shaded?  Trees, dessert, mountainous, city streets, all neighborhoods, through a park, etc?

We love to hear from our half marathon runners about all the half marathon races out there that you love, like, or didn't care for, and appreciate your feedback.  We may share your review in multiple locations such as our half marathon blogs, or possibly even on Halfmarathonsearch.com.  You can ask to be published anonymously if you'd like, but we do need your information in order to publish.

Happy Running!

Triple Crown Rail Half Marathon Race Report by Fifty States HALF Marathon Club member .......

Triple Crown Rail Half Marathon Race Report in Newark Delawar on Saturday 4/28 by Fifty States HALF Marathon Club member Timothy Nohe

The day dawned with a late April layer of frost on my car at my sister's home in Havre de Grace, MD, about 30 minutes from the venue. So it was cold. I did come prepared with my cold gear.

The first 5k went very well. It was uneven terrain with roots, downed trees, rocks both protruding and loose, lots of hills. I normally do run/walk, but today, as cold as it was (35 - 40F at the horn) it was better and easier to run it out. Plus the trail didn't leave much room to let faster people to pass. At 5k, you could hear people screaming and yelling. They came upon what was called a creek.

You would think a creek might be at worst ankle deep, couple of feet across.

You would be wrong.

This is a small river complete with a strong current and uneven bottom and a knee deep pool in the middle, a good 40 feet across.

In we went. The next seven mile were not for the weak of heart. At one point, I was in the lead of a small pack, and not daring to drop to a walk, lest I got run over, and I was calling out obstacles as I came upon them:
"Puddle!"
"Log!"
"Gravel!"
"Dead fox puppy!"

Yes indeed. Right in the middle of the trail was a cute little kit, dead.

Many of the uphill, I saw seasoned trail veterans slow to a walk. As we went around from woods, to meadow, to swamps (on either side), an back, I watched in horror as my average pace dwindled from a sub-10:00 to a super-12:00.

The was a hard race. I had had a good dinner and a good breakfast, but I was losing steam. I ate my sports beans, my gu gel, the cookies and hard candies offered at the water stations, and yet I was still burning fuel fast. After crossing the "creek" the second time I heard my stomach growl.

I was actually hungry!

I always carry a Clif bar just for this. This time instead of just eating half, I had the whole thing. This was just after mile 11. After 25 minutes, it had no effect.

Soon there was a stampede. It was the 10k getting started coming at us from the opposite direction. And this trail was just about wide enough for one. These people coming at us were all fresh and eager and we were all finishing out the string on a half marathon.

Hell yes, I yielded the right of way.

The last mile was mostly a very steep hill that I walked up. At the top, you could see the finish area almost a mile ahead, but I just didn't have the energy to turn on that last kick. So I just barely jogged in. I walked across the finish. I was done.

2:44:xx which is a super-12:00 mile.

No medals for the half but I did get a coffee mug. As soon as I collect that trinket, I did a most uncharacteristic (for me) thing: I went over to the canteen and I had a couple of hot dogs.

So I know it sounds like I was miserable, but I wasn't. In some bizarre way, it was actually a lot of fun. Stretches where i would be in a string of people pacing behind another runner. Places where you would have to plan your pass. Downhills screaming like an idiot. Uphills ... those opposite uphills were Hell.

I had a lot of fun.

Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Marathon & Half Marathon Results

Oct 31, 2011 Article submitted by the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor

EASTON (Oct. 28) –  Five hundred twenty five runners from 15 states and the District of Columbia competed in the inaugural Delaware & Lehigh Heritage Marathon and Half-Marathon along the D&L Trail on Sunday, Oct. 23. Twenty-four-year-old Chris Bauer of Sea Cliff, NY was the overall winner of the 26.2-mile marathon in a time of 2:53.14. The top time in the half-marathon was turned in by 42-year-old Sean Robbins of Shavertown, PA, who ran the 13.1-mile course in 1:17.05.

Hundreds of spectators gathered at the finish line near Lehigh Gap to cheer on the 475 runners who finished the races. Runners started in the Borough of Northampton and followed the D&L Trail through portions of Northampton, Lehigh, and Carbon counties. Marathon runners also covered the Slate Heritage Trail in Slatington and the Lehigh New England Trail in East Penn Township, Carbon County. The wide, flat course proved to be a favorite among the racers.

“The course was beautiful, and I had a great time,” said Jenna Jebitsch of Allentown, who ran the half-marathon in 2:22.41. “I would definitely consider running the full marathon next year.”

”It was a well-planned and organized event on a beautiful, fast course,” said another Allentown resident, 36-year-old half-marathon runner, Dave Sabol. “While it was the first year for the race, it was hard to tell as everything from logistics to catering were handled exceptionally well. There was lots of on-course support, great volunteers, and a nice finish festival made this race one that I won't soon forget.”

The top female in the marathon was 28-year-old Jessica Kennedy of Morristown, NJ, who blazed the 26.2-mile course in 3:16.40. The top female runner in the half-marathon was 38-year-old Mindy Sawtelle-Zottola of Indiana, PA, with a time of 1:25.06.

“The racers and their support for the race helped us bring our dream to reality,” said D&L Race Director, Rayne Schnabel. “The racers made it phenomenal. It surpassed any expectations I had for an inaugural race. We’re excited to begin next year’s plans.”

Stephen Armstrong of Macungie was one of the 288 half-marathon runners, finishing the course in 2:32.31. Armstrong said he would “do it again” in 2012 when the races are tentatively planned for the fourth Sunday in October. “Overall it was an enjoyable run and not bad for a first-time event,” Armstrong noted. “The volunteers were very motivated and encouraging.”

Following is a list of the top three male and female overall and age group marathon and half-marathon winners. A complete list of all runners who finished the races, and their times, can be accessed online at http://www.pretzelcitysports.com/roadracesresults.html.
